Information campaign on the introduction of the euro banknotes and coins: selection of the agency
The Governing Council of the European Central Bank (ECB) has selected Publicis as the agency which will assist in conducting an information campaign in preparation for the introduction of the euro banknotes and coins on 1 January 2002.
The main goals of the EURO 2002 campaign are:
- to gradually prepare the general public for the introduction of the euro banknotes and coins so that they are favourably received;
- to help the general public to recognise the euro banknotes and coins (information about the security features); and
- to show cashiers in shops and banks how to examine the euro banknotes quickly and efficiently in order to detect possible counterfeits;
This campaign will be conducted in close co-operation with the European Commission and the euro area Member States.
The ECB published a tender notice in the Official Journal of the European Communities on 12 February 1999 in respect of a contract to prepare and conduct a Europe-wide information campaign connected to the introduction of the euro banknotes and coins on 1 January 2002. Of the resulting 40 applications, nine companies were invited to give a presentation at the ECB.
As announced in a previous press release, three companies were shortlisted in May to participate in the final stage of the competition for the award of the EURO 2002 campaign contract. Following a presentation of detailed campaign plans by each of the three agencies, the contract will be negotiated with Publicis.
