Environmental protection at the European Central Bank

We too have a role to play in protecting the environment and fighting climate change by reducing our organisational footprint.

In 2007, to improve our environmental performance and reduce our carbon footprint as much as possible, we implemented an internal environmental policy. Since 2010 we have also been registered with the European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme.

How is the ECB fostering environmental protection?

Our environmental policy commits us to reducing the operational carbon footprint and improving the environmental performance of the ECB. Progress is driven by the ECB’s Environmental Management System, certified with ISO 14001 and registered with EMAS. Our 2030 emission reduction objective relies on science-based methodologies.

What is the ECB’s environmental focus for 2025-2027?

Environmental protection at the ECB is entering a new cycle, guided by our new Environmental Management Programme for 2025-27 which focuses on the six areas set out below. Building on previous experience, the programme aims to further reduce the environmental impact of our organisation focusing on the six aspects presented below. Our actions to improve our own environmental performance will be guided by the new Environmental Management Programme 2025-2027.

Six key areas of our environmental actions for 2025-2027:

Continuing to pursue our Paris-aligned emission reduction objective.

Exploring ways to enhance the energy efficiency of our premises.

Embedding a reuse and recycle culture in our organisation.

Further adapting the garden of the main building to provide a sanctuary for biodiversity.

Reducing travel-related emissions through a systematic policy review.

Promoting environmentally sustainable behaviour among ECB staff.
